This is your first home and, while the previous owners took good care of it, you’re starting to uncover little problems. The toilet keeps running after it’s flushed until you jiggle the handle. This is a good way to get your “feet wet” with your first DIY project. Replacing the toilet flushing mechanism takes about an hour with simple household tools. Here is what you need to know to do this project and have your first DIY homeowner project scratched off of your list.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • flat-blade screwdriver
  • channel lock pliers
  • knife or box cutter
  • old rags for cleanup
  • toilet repair kit (From the plumbing supplies department of your home improvement store)

Step-By-Step Instructions

  1. Shut off the water to the toilet using the valve against the wall behind the toilet.
  2. Flush the toilet and allow it to empty.
  3. Remove the lid to the toilet tank.
  4. Remove the standing water in the tank.
  5. Remove the water supply line connected to the flushing mechanism on the bottom outside of the tank.
  6. Inside of the tank, remove the chain connecting the flapper valve to the handle.
  7. Remove the short tube connecting the flushing mechanism to the large inlet tube attached to the bottom of the tank.
  8. Remove the flapper valve from the inlet tube.
  9. Unscrew the large plastic nut from the flushing mechanism on the outside bottom of the tank.
  10. Pull the old flushing mechanism out of the tank and discard.
  11. Wipe out the bottom of the tank, especially around the opening in which the flushing mechanism sits.
  12. Open the toilet kit and lay out all of the parts.
  13. Place the large rubber washer onto the bottom of the flushing mechanism.
  14. Place this tube down through the hole in the tank.
  15. Loosely secure the tube with the large plastic nut.
  16. Turn the flushing mechanism until the small water return tube lines up with the large inlet tube in the tank.
  17. Tighten the nut on the flushing mechanism until it is snug.
  18. Connect the small rubber tube in the kit to the water inlet tube on the flushing mechanism and onto the large inlet tube in the tank.
  19. Connect the new flapper valve to the base of the large inlet tube.
  20. Connect the chain from the handle to the flapper valve.
  21. Connect the water supply line from the wall to the bottom of the flushing mechanism outside of the tank on the bottom.
  22. Turn on the water and allow the tank to fill completely.

Many who are environmentally conscious practice recycling to support better use of our resources. Plastics are one of those frequently recycled products. You may wonder what actually happens to all those jugs, bottles and plastic containers you tote to the curb in your recycle tub. 

One way that waste plastic is recycled back into circulation is through melting it down to produce new products. That process is called injection molding. To help you better appreciate recycling your plastic waste, here are the basics of the injection molding process.

Two Halves to a Mold

Injection molds are made of two metal plates, each making up one-half of a plastic product. These are separated into two pieces at a parting line. The A and B plates make up either the top and bottom of a product or two halves of a solid item. The parting line is important because this is where the mold is broken apart once the plastic has hardened into a new toy, tool, or other plastic product.  

The Injection Mold Process

Fluid plastic resin is poured into the injection molds through a small opening called a sprue. The sprue is located in the A plate.

From the A plate the fluid resin moves throughout the mold through runners. Runners are like little tunnels that distribute the plastic evenly to the different part of the mold.

Within each of these cavities the resin flows around wall-like barriers, or protrusions called cores. The shape of these cores is what makes the shape of the final product.

The resin injected into the sprue, through the runners to fill up the cavities in the injection mold is called a shot. The amount of fluid plastic resin in each shot will equal the amount of final plastic that makes up whatever the new product is going to be.

If there is a hole or another type of opening in the part, there is a block in the cavity to stop the flow of resin. This concept is also used to separate two distinct cavities in the final plastic product.

Air pockets, which are not specific aspects of the product design to produce holes or gaps in the finished item, leak out slowly through little gaps in the plates called vents. While each side of the part is distinct, with a unique shape and specific holes or cavities, the parting line is placed in the best place on the product to simplify the release from the mold. This line is often very evident on household plastic products, along with a hidden little vent hole where the excess air was released.

Ejector pins are another way to remove the final products from the mold. These are usually in the B plate side of the item. Ejector pins are almost always used for any half of the product that moves. These can be spring loaded to essentially pop the bottom half of the mold out of the B plate.

While all this is pretty easy to visualize when you’re thinking about small plastic items like toys, tools, or other household things, there are massive injection molds that produce plastic products so large they need a forklift or crane to maneuver. But, even the largest plastic products use the same basic concept of injection molding we covered here. Only real difference is the size of every component and the amount of plastic resin required in the process.

How To Clean A Swimming Pool That That Is Overgrown With Green Algae

If you have a residential swimming pool that has been inundated by stormwater or wastewater or has been neglected and is green with algae, it will be necessary to clean your pool manually. Merely adding chlorine will not be able to clean a pool that is overgrown with green algae. Here are the steps to take to thoroughly clean a swimming pool that is green with algae:   

  • Brush Algae From Sides of the Pool – With a coarse brush on a long handle, brush all visible algae off the sides of the swimming pool. Scrape all surfaces from the top edge down to the bottom of the pool to loosen as much algae as possible. Scrape the algae off and allow it to float on the surface of the water and then sink to the bottom of the pool.    
  • Clean Pool Filters and Pump – Turn off the pool pump and open the pool filter reservoir. Remove the pool filters and thoroughly clean them under running water to remove all debris and algae. Clean the skimmer basket as well. Remove the top of the pool pump and lift out the filter basket. Empty and clean the filter basket under running water to get rid of any debris. After cleaning, return the pool basket to the top of the pump, turn on the pump, and let it run continually for 24 hours before proceeding with the next step. 
  • Add Liquid Algaecide – After 24 hours, walk around the perimeter of the pool and pour one entire bottle of the liquid copper-based algaecide into the pool water. Because the pool filter is running, the algaecide will readily mix with the pool water. This additive can kill all of the algae and leave only dead organic debris. 
  • Add Pool Flocculant – Add a bottle of pool flocculant to the pool water while walking around the perimeter of the pool to make sure the flocculant is distributed evenly in all parts of the pool. This additive will cause the dead algae to clump together and sink to the bottom of the pool. 
  • Add Chlorine to the Pool Water – Add pool chlorine to the pool water in the usual proportions for your particular swimming pool. Use only pure chlorine (sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite) without any other additives. After a few hours, you can see the water begin to clear as the algae sinks to the bottom of the pool. Wait another 24 hours before proceeding with the next step. 
  • Skim and Vacuum the Pool – Use a pool skimmer to collect any large pieces of debris from the bottom of the pool. Next, use a pool vacuum to gather all the remaining dead algae and debris on the bottom of the pool. Start from the shallow end of the pool and vacuum down into the deep end. Depending on the volume of algae you had in your pool, you may need to vacuum the pool again and empty the vacuum reservoir more than once. 
  • Clean Pool Filters, Pump, and Basket – Once again, clean the pool filters, skimmer basket, and pool pump of the dead algae and debris from the last 24 hours. 
  • Test the Chlorine Level and PH Level in the Pool – Test the chlorine level and acidity level in the pool as you usually do for regular pool maintenance. If the chlorine level is low and the acidity level is high, adjust as needed by adding sodium bisulfate (dry acid) and/or muriatic acid.

After the above procedure, your pool should be clean, clear, and blue. If the water in your pool is still cloudy, you may need to repeat this process again to thoroughly clean it. Once you have destroyed all the green algae and vacuumed it out of the pool, you can return to a regular maintenance routine and schedule. It is a good idea to use an algaecide once a month (in proportions specified on the bottle) to make sure that all algae has been killed and does not return.
